SYNLAB validates saliva sampling method for SARS-CoV-2 testing

SYNLAB, leading European provider of medical diagnostic solutions, has revealed the successful authorization of saliva sampling platform, another groundbreaking non-invasive and pain-free RT-PCR sampling process for SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus testing.

A saliva sample can be conveniently obtained pain-free even at home without the need for medical professionals, using this revolutionary technology. In order to take a sample, 1-1.5 ml of saliva is transferred to a sample cup, which is then sent to the SYNLAB SARS-CoV-2 testing laboratory using RT-PCR.

Safe and pain-free home-based testing for SARS-CoV-2

Saliva sampling rules out both the patient’s distress and suffering and the interaction with healthcare practitioners. Moreover, the sampling can be performed safely in a home atmosphere without the use of protective gear. Upon sampling, basic cleaning of the space meets all the necessary hygiene requirements.

The new approach is particularly appropriate for children who are often fearful of traditional swab sampling and may not yet be able to gargle enough for mouthwash sampling, although it is available for all patients. This novel approach will be adopted by SYNLAB in most of its laboratory systems. The internal validation procedure has demonstrated that the outcomes are as accurate as the standard swab sampling results.

Santiago Valor, Chief Medical Officer of SYNLAB Group:

“SYNLAB has continuously been innovating the way how samples are taken in order to make it as comfortable and convenient as possible for the patients. Just recently, we implemented mouthwash sampling. Saliva sampling takes it one step further, providing an easy way of sample collection also for children. Additionally, the self-sampling helps to ease the burden on medical professionals during the pandemic and could speed up to the process until test result.”
