Guanidine Thiocyanate 4x crystallized, also known as Guanidinium Thiocyanate (GITC) is a chaotropic agent, which acts as a strong protein denaturant. Routinely, it is used as a nucleic acid protector in the isolation of DNA and RNA from cells and for protein solubilization.

Guanidinium thiocyanate is used as a general protein denaturant, being a chaotropic compound, although it is most commonly used as a nucleic acid protector in the extraction of DNA and RNA from cells. It has a very good solubility in water (3 M in H2O).
Extraction of cellular DNA and RNA with Guanidine Thiocyanate (GITC)
Guanidine thiocyanate is recommended for use in the isolation of DNA and RNA, particularly from tissues with high levels of RNase activity. Guanidinium thiocyanate is used to lyse cells and virus particles in RNA and DNA extractions, where its function, in addition to its lysing action, is to prevent activity of RNase enzymes and DNase enzymes by denaturing them. It is also used for protein solubilization.
RNA isolation processes most commonly entail the disruption of tissue in a concentrated guanidinium thiocyanate solution. GERBU’s soluble colorless crystals powder form of Guanidine Thiocyanate (GITC) 4x crystallized is perfectly suitable for the isolation of RNA.
Guanidinium thiocyanate can be used to deactivate viruses. As well as for its chaotropic qualities, Guanidinium Thiocyanate also has use cases in inactivating enveloped viruses, such as Influenza, as well as certain non-enveloped viruses, so they can be researched safely.
