The Pharmaceutical Grade Ampicillin Sodium Salt, manufactured by GERBU, is recommended for antibacterial use in cell culture media at 100 mg/L. It is also recommended for use in ampicillin-resistance studies at 20-125 µg/ml.

D(-)-α-Amino-benzylpenicillin sodium salt has its antibiotic spectrum against both, Gram negative (similar to tetracycline and chloramphenicol) bacteria and Gram positive (similar to benzylpenicillin) bacteria. 

Ampicillin sodium salt is a sodium salt form of ampicillin, a broad-spectrum semisynthetic derivative of aminopenicillin. Ampicillin sodium salt inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis, a key component of the bacterial cell wall.

Ampicillin, an antibiotic in the broad-spectrum penicillin group, differentiates from penicillin only because of the presence of an amino group enabling penetration through the outer membrane of some gram-negative bacteria. Ampicillin acts by interfering directly with the turnover of the bacterial cell wall and indirectly by triggering the release of enzymes that further alter the cell wall.

This product is provided as a white or almost white powder and should be kept closed at 0-5°C in a dark and dry place.
